“Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act”
Effective Jan 4, 2014
What is the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act?
The Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act requires that all pipes, plumbing fittings and fixtures used in the installation or repair of water systems that provides water for human consumption, have a lead content no more than a weighted average of 0.25%. This law goes into effect nationwide January 4, 2014.
Exemptions: Pipe or Plumbing fixtures that are used exclusively for non-potable services such as manufacturing, industrial processing, irrigation, outdoor watering, or any other uses where the water is not anticipated to be used for human consumption. Also, toilets, bidets, urinals, fill valves, flushometers, shower valves, or distribution main gate valves that are 2” in diameter or larger will be exempt.
How is Cayce Mill Supply preparing for this new law?
Cayce Mill has already begun transitioning many products to “Lead Free”. The majority of “Lead Free” products will cost 15%-25% more then their leaded counterparts. Because of this, where possible, we will continue to keep some leaded products until later in the year. The majority of our suppliers have already suspended accepting returns of “leaded” product. Therefore returns of “leaded” product will not be allowed after August 1, 2013.
How should customers prepare?
Customers should make a conscious effort to use up any “leaded” stock they have in preparation of this new law. They should also be conscious of bidding work starting or carrying over into 2014. This work could require the materials to be compliant with the “Lead Free” laws. Even if purchased prior to the Jan 4th, 2013 date, it will be illegal to install once the law is in effect.
